The war in Ukraine will continue at least next year, predicts the British defense and security think tank.
The West must support a Ukrainian counter-offensive in the coming months, said Professor Malcolm Chalmers, deputy director of the Royal Joint Services Institute (RUSI).
Among other things, it should be done so that Kyiv is “in a good position to fight in the event of a long war, because the chances of this war ending this year are very slim,” the professor told the BBC.
At the moment, neither Ukraine nor Russia has superiority over the other, he said to the “Today” program of “BBC Radio 4”.
Western intelligence reports that Russia is concentrating aircraft within striking distance of Ukraine are a cause for concern, but not an emergency, he added.
Commenting on Russia’s success, Chalmers said: “This is nothing like the large-scale seizure of Ukrainian territory that we saw in the early stages of the invasion, and not least because the Ukrainians are now mobilized and ready and fighting very strongly for their own territory .”
“The fact is that Russia is losing a lot of people and a lot of equipment, and the real question is to what extent they will be able to maintain the offensive in the long term,” said the representative of the think tank.
