Britain’s ruling Labor party is temporarily suspending one of its MPs because, according to media reports, he is said to have punched a man. Mike Amesbury will be suspended from the parliamentary group while the allegations are investigated, British news agency PA said.
The politician told X at the weekend that he had been involved in an incident in which he felt threatened after being out with friends in the afternoon. The following morning, he called the police himself to report what had happened. He did not provide details.
Cheshire Police confirmed, according to PA, that a 55-year-old man had voluntarily submitted to questioning about an incident after officers received a call about an assault on Saturday night.
The Daily Mail newspaper published images from a surveillance camera. It shows a man beating another man – according to the paper, it is supposed to be Amesbury. The MP, who represents a constituency near Liverpool, did not immediately comment on the video. In another video, which is expected to be shown to him, he says: “You will not threaten me again!” Last year, a man who stalked Amesbury was convicted of stalking.
