British reporter Stacey Dooley gets to know the everyday life of a funeral home in his new documentary. Stacey Dooley: in the face of death is shown today on TV2.
Dooley fears death and says he dreads the thought of not existing anymore. In his documentary, Dooley faces his fears face to face when he spends several weeks in a Nottingham funeral home.
– I want to live forever. However, I don’t think it’s likely, says Dooley.
On his first day, Dooley meets Patinwho has arrived to plan his own funeral. There is no indication that death is imminent. However, 80-year-old Pat wants to complete the preparations himself.
– I think it is important to take care of such things. When you get everything done, you also face your fear at the same time. Then you can get on with your life, Pat explains. Death doesn’t scare him, so he comforts the much younger Dooley who is struggling with it.
– The fact that I have a wonderful son and grandchildren helps me. A part of me lives in them. It gives a lot of comfort, says Pat.
Pat wants to be buried in jeans and coral lipstick. He chooses his coffin from inexpensive natural materials, such as bamboo, cardboard or basket weave. Collecting materials is just a waste.

In the documentary, Dooley not only participates in the funeral preparations, he also watches the embalming and visits the morgue.
A particularly difficult experience for a journalist is when a baby’s body is picked up from the morgue to be transferred to the funeral home. Dooley watches the preparation of the body, sensitive to tears and averting his eyes. An employee notices Dooley’s predicament.
– It feels wild to look at such a small body bag, Dooley explains.
– You’ll never get used to it. Those little bags are treated very gently, the employee answers.
On the way back, the hearse driver turns on the blower. Otherwise, a nasty smell can come from the back of the car.
