According to speculation, a numbered Borderlands is not being worked on, but a spin-off.
Gamereactor Namely reports the unconfirmed spin-off and even claims that it won’t be long before we officially hear about it.
This story is supported by Gamesbeat journalist Jeff Grubb during his podcast. He also claims that Gearbox is not at the helm of the game, but has an assisting role.
This rumor has been denied by Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, who reports in a Tweet that the studio will always be responsible for the series and not a co-developer for a new Borderlands. However, he says in a later tweet that the team is working on ‘the Big One’.
“We are definitely working on some amazing stuff that, I hope, will surprise and delight you. Plug: if anyone out there has Skills-To-Pay-Bills and wants to get in on some Borderlands action, we’re working on the big one :)”
We still want to rule out that Pitchford has often denied rumors in the past that later turned out to contain some truth. For example, he denied that Battleborn had one free-to-play game would be, but that happened later.
Much like the fact that he claimed before the launch of Borderlands 3 that the game would not contain microtransactions, but shortly afterwards it was revealed by the game director that the game would contain items that could be purchased in real currency (better known as microtransactions).
Regardless, it looks like we can expect something from the developer at the upcoming digital E3. Although that of course never really means anything. Do you hope there will be a new Borderlands? Or that they turn it into a different kind of genre game? Let us know in the comments!
