Roman Yaremchuk started in the 1-1 draw with France and was decisive as he assisted Shaparenko in Ukraine’s goal. The Benfica forward was also influential in the team’s defensive performance, having received indications from coach Oleksandr Petrakov to closely monitor Paul Pogba’s midfield moves.
“I asked Yaremchuk to come down and cover Pogba, who is a world football star,” said Petrakov, explaining why he decided during the game to replace the three strikers who came in at the start: Yaremchuk, Tsygankov and Yarmolenko: “I wanted to hold the result.”
