Andreas Samaris starts training with Benfica’s B team today. The 32-year-old Greek international midfielder is not part of Jorge Jesus’ plans and has refused all Benfica’s attempts to negotiate a mutually agreed termination of the contract that runs until 2023.
Samaris’ relegation to the secondary team is the latest episode in a situation that has dragged on since the end of the previous season. The Greek midfielder underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon in March, long after the recommendation of the medical department, which had identified a chronic lesion months earlier. Samaris decided, however, to continue training, but the problem had to be resolved with surgery. The midfielder later preferred to start his recovery in Greece, accompanied by two physiotherapists from the Greek national team. He returned for the new season and informed the medical department that he was well and recovered and started training. But the pain continued and led him to travel to Madrid last week to be consulted by the doctor who operated on him.
