Unsurprisingly, Rúben Dias was named Premier League player of the year. It was arriving, seeing and winning for the central who left Benfica for Manchester City. He is the second Portuguese to win after Cristiano Ronaldo, who was distinguished twice in 2006/07 and 2007/08.
It’s a sort of one-two for Rúben Dias, after having also won the sports journalists award last month. The defender was elected in a combination of popular vote and choices of 20 club captains and an expert panel.
Using statistics, the Premier League highlights Dias’ season since he arrived in September 2020: 15 games without conceding, 23 wins in 32 games, 35 steals, 24 tackles, 23 blocks and 135 recoveries.
Dias succeeds teammate Kevin De Bruyne, who won last year and was also in the race, and Tottenham’s Harry Kane, as well as compatriot Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) , Tomas Soucek (West Ham) and Mason Mount (Chelsea).
