A BOLA – History: Cavendish wins the 13th stage, the fourth in this edition, and equals Merckx (Return to France)

Mark Cavendish (Deceunick Quick-Step) won the 13th stage on the Tour this Friday and now has four victories in this edition, a total of 34 triumphs on the Tour, equaling the legendary Eddy Merckx, who had the record since 1975.

The 36-year-old Brit won the race – 219km between Nîmes and Carcassonne with a time of 05:04.29 hours, – marked by two falls and some abandonments, and in which he even stopped for a few seconds to change bikes.

Cavendish, who holds the green points jersey, outscored his teammate Michael Morkov and Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix).

Rúben Guerreiro was 23rd with the same time as the winner and entered the top-20, to 19th place. Rui Costa lost 2m23.

In general there was no change, with the race being led by Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), with 05.18 minutes ahead of Colombian Rigoberto Úran (EF Education-Nippo), and 05.32 over Danish Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) .

On Saturday, the 14th stage will cover 183.7 kilometers between Carcassonne and Quillan, with three second-rate mountain counts.
