The Cape Verde team was and is being affected by food poisoning that conditions its preparation for this Tuesday’s game, with Senegal, counting for the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations (CAN-2021).
“On Sunday, the Cape Verdean delegation in Cameroon faced, and still faces, an outbreak of gastroenteritis due to food poisoning that affected 18 people, 14 of which were players”, informed the Cape Verdean federation.
The Tubarões Azuis doctor, Humberto Évora, spoke of an outbreak of “10 to 12 players”, a problem that also affected Gambia, which shares the same hotel.
“There are situations of different severity, and everyone is being medicated. There are athletes with gastroenteritis, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Some did not train and others did it in a conditioned way. We will try to get them back so they can play a good game», said the clinician.
For his part, Cape Verde’s coach, Pedro Leitão, admits that he will have to “wait until game time” to figure out which team he will be able to use, stating, even so, that the only focus of the players is on qualifying .
“No one knows if it was from water, food or something else. We have to find solutions, those who can play will be as cohesive as possible. We will enter with maximum confidence. We will show our people our courage, facing this difficult game with the utmost responsibility.”
