Leylah Fernández, 73rd in the world ranking, qualified this Tuesday for the semi-finals of the US Open in tennis.
In the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows, the 19-year-old Canadian beat fifth seeded Ukrainian Elena Svitolina 6-3, 3-6 and 7-6 (7-5 in the tie-break)
Fernández will face in the semi-finals the winner of the clash between the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (9th in the WTA table) and the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (2nd).
It is the first time that the Canadian has reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam.
