As previously reported, Britain on Tuesday published a document outlining a recalibration of its foreign policy which includes an announcement to grow its nuclear arsenal, reversing previous commitments to reduce its stockpile of mass destruction bombs.
The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, expressed the same regret that the Russian Foreign Ministry conveyed. “We deeply regret that the UK has chosen this path of upgrading nuclear warheads. This decision is detrimental to international stability and strategic security, “he told reporters.
“The presence of nuclear warheads is what threatens peace throughout the world,” he said.
The British move contradicts a recent agreement between Moscow and Washington.
In January, Russia agreed with the United States to extend a major nuclear pact between the two countries that was the last remaining arms reduction agreement between former Cold War rivals.
