Several legislators in Florida (USA) promote a bill that will turn scams in the offer of vaccines against covid-19 into a serious crime, in the face of cases of deception of older people who are asked in internet sites a payment to make an appointment.
The initiative, led by Chris Sprowls and Ardian Zika, members of the Florida House of Representatives, wants to end fraudulent online sites that request personal information and an amount of money for an appointment and to be able to get vaccinated.
Sprowls warned about the false legal appearance of these internet sites and warned the scammers that, ‘if they do it and get in the way of a vulnerable population’, we will go with the full weight of the law for them, picked up the local channel WPTV.
Zika, a Republican, introduced the bill under the chapter Protecting Consumers Against Fraud During the Pandemic and is currently in the hands of the Subcommittee on Public Safety and Criminal Justice.
For her part, the Florida state attorney general, Ashley Moody, recently alerted the public on her Twitter account about the importance of being vigilant about possible online frauds, frauds that, if the bill were approved, would become now on third degree crimes.
Florida added 13,720 new cases and 217 deaths from covid-19 on Thursday in a ‘full resurgence’ of infections, while the authorities try to alleviate the pandemic with a vaccination campaign that gives priority to adults over 65 years of age.
In its most recent report on Florida, the White House Coronavirus Task Force warned that this “resurgence” of cases “will cause significant deaths over many weeks and will stress the staffing of the hospital system.”
