A big change with the tunnels in our country. Talking – 2024-04-06 20:58:43

A big change with the tunnels in our country – they are already talking. Smart highway tunnels will be taught to recognize if something is on fire so they don’t raise a false fire alarm.

The measures will be taken after the Echemishka tunnel’s fire warning system was activated on Monday without anything burning inside.

Alarm

“Attention, ladies and gentlemen. We have an urgent problem right now. Please use the marked evacuation routes. Please don’t block the exits,” heard drivers and passengers traveling in the tunnel at that time.

The calm, non-panicking voice from the recording accompanied the slow-moving cars due to traffic jams along the entire 820-meter length of the facility. The traffic jam was due to heavy traffic on Monday morning.

A check later showed that the messages were played automatically by the system, which was activated because the exhaust gas content in the tunnel was too high. The alarm woke up those on duty in the tunnel’s control center, who immediately checked all video surveillance systems and found that nothing was on fire, writes “Telegraph”.

Requirements

According to the tunnel design regulation, which has been in force since before the modernization of the two Echemishka tubes (2018 and 2022), the alarm levels of all accident detection sensors are periodically checked for correct response within the limits at which they are set up.

In this case, the sensors will be tested to find out if they were set too conservatively, or if vehicles with faulty engines and exhaust systems were passing through the tunnel at the time, causing excessive smoke in the facility, similar to that of a fire.

Under the ordinance, the tunnel’s ventilation system is also subject to periodic inspection to determine whether it is effectively venting exhaust gases.

Take it easy

The Road Infrastructure Agency (API) apologized to travelers for the inconvenience caused. From there, they reassured that the tunnel has 24-hour video surveillance, fire alarm systems, ventilation, video surveillance, traffic lights, energy-efficient lighting and a light guidance system, which ensure the safety of travel and the ability to respond quickly in the event of an accident.

The tunnel also has a system for removing flammable and toxic liquids from the roadway.
