A Bansky treated like simple graffiti, erased from the London Underground

To encourage the wearing of a mask against the new coronavirus, Banksy recently painted rats on the London Underground. But cleaning crews erased them without knowing it was a work by the famous British artist, the BBC said on Wednesday.

Banksy posted a video on his Instagram account Tuesday of a man in a white jumpsuit, who could be the artist himself, drawing rats – his favorite animal – on a subway, his face hidden by a mask, cap and goggles. The artist’s work, whose identity is not known, is entitled “If you do not wear a mask, you have understood nothing”. In particular, it depicts a sneezing rat or another with its muzzle covered with a mask.

According to the BBC, when the work was unveiled on Instagram, it had already been deleted by the cleaning crews of Transport for London (TfL), the public transport operator in the British capital, who “did not know” that she was from Banksy. “It was treated like any other graffiti on the network,” said a source within TfL cited by the public audiovisual group. “The job of the cleaning crews is to keep the network clean, especially in the current climate.”

Questioned by AFP, TfL said that “the work was removed a few days ago due to our strict anti-graffiti policy”. “We would like to offer Banksy the opportunity to produce a new version of their message for our customers in an appropriate location,” added a spokesperson.
