When the couple, who passed the door of the Chamiers police station a few minutes earlier, relates what happened to them during the night, the police cannot believe their ears.
Truck driver, the man, and his friend, had loaded leather lounges in the Landes and were going back to Picardy when, coming out of a restaurant in Charente, armed road pirates had taken them hostage, led close to Brantôme, where they had to abandon the truck, then taken to a farm about fifteen kilometers further, to finally abandon them in an industrial area in Chamiers in the early morning.
By repeating the epic of their crazy night to the Chamiers police officers, the security inspectors and the PJ, the Prosecutor begins to believe it, despite the absence of any trace of the truck or the road pirates.
It almost feels like the Far West. When the truck is found the next day, stuck in a muddy dead end road in St-Jory-de-Chalais, investigators get their hands on seven people. They were not at their first attempt! One finds in one of them weapons, counterfeit banknotes, a stolen car and a fake police uniform. Four of them join the prison box.
The investigators succeed in reconstructing the course of the evening. Two thugs had decided to take over a truck on the N10. Surprised by the couple leaving the restaurant, they threatened them with their guns and took the road towards Bussac, where one of the criminals lives. They lock them in the cellar while they go to hide the truck away from a busy road. Too far, because they get bogged down and have to abandon their valuable cargo. In order to cover their tracks, they drop off their victims in an industrial area before returning home.
Here is this incredible but true affair which took place in January 1990. Finally, two years later, the two principal thugs are condemned to seven years of imprisonment.
