Since this Thursday, in France, it is forbidden to hold professional football matches on May 5th. The decision was promulgated by the Gallic parliament and will be put into effect immediately.
An unusual decision, but one that pays homage to one of the greatest tragedies in French football, the Drama de Furiani. On May 5, 1992, in a semi-final of the cup, Bastia decided to put up removable stands to increase the capacity by 50% in the reception to Marseille. The pendo was sanctioned by the local authorities, however, one of these benches ended up giving way and led to the death of 19 people, with another 2300 being injured.
The tragedy was such that the Armand-Cesari stadium had to undergo a thorough repair to be able to host matches again. The game was canceled and the French Federation decided that the final would not be played that year, with Monaco being the other team through.
