A BALL – «In high competition, details pay dearly» (Boavista)

With a dark face after the elimination of the Portuguese Cup, at the foot of Rio Ave, the coach of Boavista, João Pedro Sousa, lamented, in a press conference, the wave of injuries that devastated the squad.

“It is very reductive to say that the result is heavy. We have been playing with limitations of some players and this is a situation that is hurting us, it is leaving us in tremendous difficulties. We have no other options than getting players to play. I thought things were difficult, but now they are. We lost Porozo for eight weeks, we lost Reisinho for eight months, and today we lost two more players. We finished the game with nine players, this hurts a little bit, but we have to find solutions to the problems», he stressed.

Urged to justify the rout, the coach was peremptory: “It’s very clear. We cannot lose 4-0 anywhere. In high competition, in high performance, details pay dearly. How are we going to justify this? Assure people that we are working the best way we know how and that’s what we will continue to do. I can’t reach the fingers of my hands to get to the dressing room and see the players on the stretchers. Today we have two more there.”

About the explanation for such a scenario, João Pedro Sousa talks about lack of rhythm and also assumes blame: «I have players who arrived completely untrained, players with quality that arrive, but who cannot respond. Marcelo is an excellent player, but he hadn’t trained for four months. James the same thing. We have several such cases. It’s a complex issue, but it’s not the only reason. I also have responsibilities.”
