A baby is born from an embryo frozen for 27 years

Tina and Ben Gibson have broken their own record with the birth of Molly, since they already have another daughter who was conceived from a brother embryo that was frozen for 24 years.

The insemination of this donated embryo was carried out by the National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC), a fertility center with a religious focus, according to the organization itself.

“Molly Everette Gibson spent more than 27 years as a frozen and preserved embryo, marking the only known record for the longest frozen embryo leading to birth,” it said in the statement.

Mark Mellinger, spokesman for the NEDC, told Efe on Friday that this confirms that “as long as the embryos are frozen and properly stored, we believe that they can remain ‘in good condition’ indefinitely.”

The NEDC focuses on saving fertilized embryos that are going to be discarded for donation to couples with fertility problems.

Molly’s embryo was frozen in 1992 and could have been born at any time in the last 27 years.

It is the genetic sister of the previous one, which comes from an embryo frozen at the same time and which was born after 24 years in conservation, which also shows that the equipment used in the 90s was advanced enough to guarantee the safety of the process.

Fertilized embryos are implanted in the mother’s uterus and are one of the cheapest alternatives for couples with fertility problems.

“This is proof that no embryo should be discarded and not considered ‘old,'” said NEDC Director Jeffrey Keenan.
