A 78-year-old man dies from COVID-19 and increases the total number of deaths in Puerto Rico to 108

The death of a 78-year-old man from the metropolitan region raised the death toll on Saturday, due to the COVID-19 in Puerto Rico to 108, according to the Health Department.

The agency reported that the number of unique cases positive for the new coronavirus increased to 2,173, which it translates into 17 new cases of contagion compared to the total of 2,156 reported yesterday.

The only case of death that was reported today was registered by the Surveillance System of the Department of Health.

The Demographic Registry did not report any cases. To report a death through this system, the patient’s clinical picture, at the time of death, must be compatible with COVID-19 and that his or her physician certify it in this way in the death certificate.

Of the total of 108 deaths, 57 were reported by the Surveillance System of the Department of Health and 51 through the Demographic Registry.

The results of the 17 additional unique positive cases are broken down into five through molecular tests and 12 by serological (rapid) tests.

The total of unique cases follows from 1,034 molecular tests and 1,139 serological tests.

While, of the total of 2,173 unique positive cases, 1,087 results correspond to women and 1,086 to men.

The Department of Health does not yet report the number of COVID-19 tests carried out on the island, but continues to add positive results. The latest available figure is 61,515, which was provided by the secretary Lorenzo González Feliciano last Tuesday, who made it clear that the figure is still being refined.

The number of patients recovered from the disease and how many of them have been contacted by agency staff as part of a case trace is also not public.

Regarding ages, the group with the highest number of infections corresponds to people between 50 and 59 years of age, with a total of 447 confirmed single cases, followed by patients between 40 and 49 years of age (396) and 30 to 39 years of age ( 354).

The number of patients aged 19 years or less infected with the new virus remains at 120. This total is broken down into 43 cases that correspond to the group of 10 years or younger, while for patients between 10 and 19 years of age the figure is 77.

The municipalities that make up the metropolitan region continue to present the highest incidence in cases of infection with a total of 632. Likewise, in second and third position are the regions of Bayamón with 399 and Caguas with 298 cases, respectively.

Overall, 76 of the 78 towns have reported unique positive cases, according to Salud. The only two towns that have not reported cases for COVID-19 are Maricao and Culebra.

The municipality with the most infections is San Juan with a total of 321, followed by Bayamón with 118 and Guaynabo with 123. However, the agency does not have information on the place of residence of 143 infected people.

According to the Health Department dashboard, there are currently 872 respirators available, 250 are busy, and 7 of them are being used by patients with the new coronavirus.

Similarly, 148 patients remain hospitalized for COVID-19 and another 10 are in intensive care.

The portal shows that there are 3,371 beds available in island-level hospitals. Of this total, 3,142 are occupied and 148 of them are occupied by COVID-19 patients.
