An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit Argentina on Monday night, near the border with Chile, according to the US Geological Survey and Chilean authorities.
The US Survey and the Seismological Institute in Argentina recorded the earthquake at 2346 local time (0246 GMT Tuesday morning), about 43 km southwest of San Juan in Argentina, and 250 km northeast of the Chilean capital Santiago.
The Argentine Seismological Institute recorded three aftershocks with strengths between 4.1 and 4.9 degrees.
Argentine newspaper “Clarin” reported that the people felt the earthquake in distant areas such as the capital, Buenos Aires, which is 1,000 km from the epicenter.
San Juan Governor Sergio Unac said on Twitter that Civil Protection, security forces and local authorities were handling calls reporting damages or the need for assistance.
The coast of Chile is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which is characterized by a high rate of seismic activity.
