A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hits the coast of Papua New Guinea

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake jolted the remote New Britain region of Papua New Guinea on Sunday US Geological Survey.

No tsunami warning was issued. The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 38 km.

On Saturday evening, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake also struck the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, affecting coastal cities without triggering a tsunami warning, according to the American Institute of Geophysics.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, which lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an area of ​​intense seismic activity that stretches across Southeast Asia and the Pacific basin.

This comes as the earthquake, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, killed more than 42,000 people in Turkey and more than 3,600 in Syria, last week.
