A 5-star hotel near Bordeaux, Maison Pavlov

Strong point: The rooms 8,1/10

In the eight rooms and suites with terrace, we play the game of materials, we sift with colors. The decoration has exotic, or rather instinctive inclinations. It seems to spring from a joy more than from a decoration project built on the absence of feeling. Leather armchairs, dark wood coffee tables, colorful rugs and cushions, very “memorabilia from travel” objects, a sense of detail right down to the wooden air conditioning mouth covers and the British finesse of the door handles. … In summary, here a heart beats. A heart that beats the rhythm all the same, – and not only because of the vinyl turntable -, since all the furniture is designed to measure. So the rooms are colorful and pretty. The only common point between all of them: the headboards in Pierre Frey fabric and very good comfort. Mini-bar, courtesy tray with good quality teas, spirits (rum, whiskey, vodka) presented in sorts of test tubes. Yes, everything is there to make bedroom life relaxing and cozy. Even a yoga mat. Notice to lovers of pink toilets from the “Trone” brand, a major sculpture in the circular bathroom in green and dark stones in our bedroom, reminiscent of a mine of raw emeralds.

First impression: 8/10

A 17th century chartreuse like a Neo-Palladian palace with sober and elegant architecture with its three doors surmounted by pediments… Here is the facade. The flat roof is surrounded by a railing decorated with balusters while the Italian influence arises at the sight of the cypresses. However, we are in Bouscat, a chic district in the south-west of Bordeaux, in an impeccable cocoon where the garden exploited in permaculture tints the protected enclave of this little nest with green. Instinctively, we expect a lot of classicism but, when entering, the surprise is amusing: the modern and colorful decoration gives the place a sparkle. As well as the stories told by certain pieces of furniture, such as this table of pearls and shells, which is in fact a Cameroonian ceremonial seat…

Table. 7.8/10

We are here in the gastronomy. And not only thanks to the thirty varieties of tomatoes that grow in season in the garden or the very pretty presentation of the plates. It is Kevin Alsuguren, the Basque chef, who offers a table with numerous menus at several times, or à la carte. In this warm room, with night lights opening the confidences, we taste the products of local producers. The pollack with black curry, fondant potatoes and its smoky flavors rounds off some dishes, while the veal from the Pyrenees, carrots and black cardamom sings its ode to tarragon with a little too much firmness. We still regret the limited choice of the menu, and above all, too few flavors worked in a sober and classic way, -like this passion-chocolate dessert very well prepared but which we would like much more contrast between the sweetness of the fruit and the ‘smooth bitterness of a powerful cocoa’, even if a Land/Sea menu is added on certain days of the week.

The spa : A hammam and a sauna are available. The SPA area offers massages from the Nohèm brand, which achieves the feat of being organic… But smelling ultra good!

Body or face care from 100 euros.

Instagram place:

The listed facade of the residence, with the swimming pool in the garden in the foreground and its deckchairs with mint mattresses of high distinction! Stunning. In fine weather, we dine there. We appreciate the two small alcoves formed by natural hedges, which preserve privacy, maintaining the cocoon effect of the place.

The experience to do : What if we came, as a couple, on sunny days, to enjoy the swimming pool heated to 30 degrees, and the candle-lit spa, which can be privatized for one hour on a simple asked…

The number : 100.

For 100% French wines on the menu. Pearls, favourites, such as Saint-Emilion Château Barde-Haut 2001 or Champagne Blanc de Blanc premier cru, Domaine Rutat.

Most :

Breakfast, served in the restaurant, can be taken to your room, with the same choice and at the same price… Rare enough to point out!

Breakfast: 25 euro

Everyone’s business…: a green approach!

In addition to compost, soaps are recycled here with the UniSoap association, and cigarette butts with the Bordeaux association EcoMegot. The garden is watered by the existing well. The paintings are ecological and the furniture chosen in natural or recycled material.

We would like to change… How about adding a small side table where you can put your toiletries when the bathroom sink doesn’t have the width to accommodate a toilet bag.

We would like to leave with… hand-painted tableware.

The entirely hand-painted Maison Pavlov tableware mixes flowers, ornaments and animals. A freshness that is both classic and touching, the refinement of which we love.

Prices : Nice surprise!

From 210 euros per night, in low season.

Seasonal offer VIP stay: 828 euros (2 nights in a superior room with upgrade depending on availability + 2 Cocktails + 2 4-course dinners + 4 breakfasts + box of chocolates and VIP access, access to the spa).
