“This object can be considered neutralized. It will no longer pose a threat to the Szczecin-Swinoujscie waterway,” said Gzegozh Levandowski, a spokesman for the 8th Coast Fleet.

A 5.4-tonne bomb detonated remotely.

It was supposed to be a controlled explosion, but it turned out to be uncontrolled. However, neither people nor infrastructure have suffered as a result, said Yaroslav Jaz, Deputy Mayor of Swinoujscie.

The authorities were preparing for the bombing operation, which was one of the largest in Europe, for a year.

750 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the risk of an uncontrolled explosion. The nearby ferry line was closed and drivers had to choose other routes.

The bomb was hit last year during the dredging of the Szczecin-Swinoujscie waterway.

It was judged to be one of the bombs dropped by British planes in 1945 on the Lützow cruiser.

The bomb contained 2.4 tonnes of explosives, equivalent to 3.6 tonnes of TNT.
