A 38-year-old man becomes the first patient with monkeypox in Hungary

The first patient with monkeypox in Hungary was a 38-year-old man.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BUDAPEST — Hungarian health authorities on Tuesday (31/5/2022) confirmed the first case monkey pox them in a 38 year old man. The disease does not spread easily and only through close contact, chief medical officer Cecilia Muller told a news conference.

Muller explained, monkeypox lasts for two to four weeks and can spread more quickly in immunocompromised patients and pregnant women. Muller emphasized that monkeypox patients should be isolated while undergoing treatment.

“We need to pay attention to these cases to determine the initial diagnosis. We need to understand the symptoms. If someone has a suspicious disease, please see a doctor,” said Muller.

Although monkeypox is most commonly found in tropical rain forest areas of central and western Africa, the disease is slowly emerging in non-endemic countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that there were 257 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 120 suspected cases in 23 countries, where the virus is not endemic.

The WHO on Tuesday warned that further transmission of monkeypox in Europe and elsewhere during this summer was likely to be high.
