Kosovo lawmakers today elected Vyosa Osmani, considered Kosovo’s most popular politician, as president, overcoming an opposition boycott that failed a quorum the day before.
Osmani, 38, a member of the younger political generation determined to fight corruption, received 71 votes from 82 lawmakers present, meaning she was “elected president of the republic,” said Speaker Glauk Konjufza. .
Behind Osmani’s candidacy is the Self-Determination Party, which won the parliamentary vote in February with more than 50 per cent of the vote.
The election of a new president came after incumbent Hashim Thaci resigned after being indicted by the Special Court in The Hague, which is investigating alleged crimes by the Kosovo Liberation Army, whose former commander was Thaci.
