They are called Mopeds and they are the electric scooters that have been flocking throughout the center of Manhattan for two years and are considered a great success, the only alternative to traffic and the subway.

By scooter but without a helmet
The victim was called Nina kapur, 26 years old and was a journalist for CBS, a reporter who by now for the public of New York he was a familiar figure, he went around the city every day with his camera to film news and public order news. Even during the pandemic Nina she had been very active with her reports throughout the city and, in a center that is almost always flooded with traffic, the way the reporter had chosen to turn freely was precisely the moped, the electric scooter.

The most important is the Revel, just the one from which Nina had rented the scooter, the protagonist of the fatal accident. It is estimated that the Mopeds regularly active only in Manhattan are over 70 thousand.

You book with a telephone application, you pay with your credit card or with prepaid subscriptions. The cost is a few cents per minute. Once you have parked the vehicle it scooter is ready for a new rental and a new customer. The pandemic has in no way slowed the market which, despite some concerns about the use of means that could also be contaminated by potentially infected people, has not suffered serious slowdowns.
You can also drive without a helmet
According to information gathered by the police who intervened on the accident site, Nina was sitting on the rear seat of the small vehicle, led by a compatriot, also 26 years old. To clarify the responsibilities of the crash: according to information from some witnesses it seems that the young man driving the moped tried to steer suddenly to avoid braking a car right in front of him and scooter would have fallen to the ground. The collision would have been quite violent. It is fatal that the journalist had not worn a helmet which is not mandatory on the Mopeds in New York.
The young woman would have been immediately rescued and rushed to the nearby hospital Belleveue but there was nothing to do to the doctors at the hospital, there was nothing left but to report the death.
