A 22-year-old man in India becomes the first ‘victim’ to die of monkeypox in Asia

Jakarta

India confirms first monkeypox death. This 22-year-old man also became the first monkeypox patient to die in Asia.

“The patient arrived in Kerala on July 21 but visited the hospital on July 26 when he showed fatigue and fever,” Minister K. Rajan was quoted as saying by Reuters, adding that there was no reason to panic as there were no close contacts showing symptoms.

Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, added that the man’s family told authorities earlier in the day that he had tested positive for monkeypox in the United Arab Emirates before returning to India.

India’s federal health ministry has no comment on the deaths, unless the government has set up a task force of senior officials to monitor cases of monkeypox.

Human-to-human transmission of monkeypox occurs through contact with body fluids, lesions on the skin or on internal mucosal surfaces, such as in the mouth or throat, respiratory droplets and contaminated objects.
