A 2026 World Cup marked by hope, joy and inclusion

  • FIFA President hails another milestone on the road to the greatest FIFA World Cup ever

  • He congratulated the 16 host cities that will host the competition in Canada, Mexico and the United States

  • Gianni Infantino: “In 2026, we will experience 80 Superbowls, 80 incredible matches, 80 finals”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expects a gigantic football celebration in 2026. He congratulated the host cities of the competition, whose identity was revealed in New York, and promised that their inhabitants would be blown away by the passion, emotion and inclusion of the FIFA World Cup™. “I believe people in this part of the world are not fully aware of what is going to happen in 2026,” President Infantino told media representatives. “These three countries will find themselves upside down. It’s a real wave of joy and happiness that will fall on Canada, Mexico and the United States because these emotions are at the heart of football. Football is the sport of immigrants, inclusion and unity.”

“This edition will bring together 48 countries. In just over four years, football in North America will completely change in dimension. This region of the world and these three countries in particular occupy a very important place in many areas: economy, sport , etc. But this is not yet the case in the number one sport in the world, football. Their objective must be to establish you as essential players in the most popular sport on the planet as well.” CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani also spoke of the encounter between very diverse societies and a multicultural and international tournament, under the aegis of football. “We are both sons of immigrants: Gianni Infantino in Switzerland and I in North America. Football is arguably the strongest bond that connects us to our fathers,” said Montagliani.

“This trophy means a lot to many people. It is associated with so many important memories in our lives. This World Cup therefore represents a major event for the region and for these three countries.”

The increase in the number of participants from 32 to 48 teams for this 23rd FIFA World Cup™ will naturally result in an increase in the number of matches. This development will allow football to extend its reach and impact around the world. “These cities are going to put on a magnificent World Cup. Today, a World Cup is 64 matches. In 2026, we are going to experience 80 Superbowls, 80 incredible matches, 80 finals and so we must ensure that these meetings take place in an ideal setting.”
