A 20-year-old man fell from a Grand Canyon lookout into the gorge and died, authorities say. The fall is said to have been about 400 meters. ABC News reported on the matter.
The accident happened last Wednesday near the Pipe Creek Lookout at around 10:40 a.m. local time. The authorities received a report that a person had fallen from the edge of the canyon.
Local authorities arrived immediately and managed to locate the 20-year-old man below the edge of the canyon. According to the authorities, it was a person from North Carolina Abel May.
– He was near the edge of the canyon and accidentally fell. Local authorities are investigating the incident.
It has remained unclear to the authorities how the man managed to fall or why he had gone near the edge of the canyon in the first place.
The National Park staff reminds you to be careful and stay on the marked paths and always keep a distance of at least two meters from the edge of the canyon.
Pipe Creek Viewpoint is a popular stop. You can get there by car or by the national park bus shuttle.
People have fallen into the gorge before. For example, in 2023, a man over 30 fell to his death. At that time it was a 1,200 meter drop. On average, 12 people die in the canyon every year.
