a 17-year-old sentenced to 12 years in prison

The juvenile court sentenced a 17-year-old minor on Friday evening to 12 years of criminal imprisonment, for the murder of Olivier Quenault in September 2019. The 47-year-old was on his way home from work. He had been assaulted by a gang of four young people then beaten up and left naked and dying in the gardens of the Hôtel de Ville in Rouen. A gratuitous and extremely violent murder, for which four people, two minors and two young adults, were arrested. This is the first trial held in this case. A closed-door trial given the age of the accused.

The prosecutor had requested 18 years of criminal imprisonment, but the court ruled below, and sentenced the defendant (who was 15 years old at the time of the facts) to 12 years imprisonment, a sentence accompanied by a socio-judicial follow-up of five years, an injunction of care and ‘an obligation to compensate the family. A “fair” sentence considers the defense lawyer, given the age of the accused and the regrets he expressed according to Master Laura Kalfon. This is not the opinion of the family or of his lawyer Fabien Picchiotino, who considers this sentence too low in view of the seriousness of the facts and the personality of the accused. The family lawyer hopes that the prosecution will appeal this judgment. He has 10 days to do so. The condemned man has already had his lawyer say that he would not appeal.

Another minor is due to be tried soon for the same facts by the juvenile assize court. Two other young people, adults and less involved in this punitive expedition where a couple and another single man had been assaulted by the gang, will be tried by the criminal court.
