A 100-year-old New York specialty? Controversy over the abolition of ‘horse-drawn carriage tours’ after a fallen horse

It is one of the old specialties of New York, USA.

There are growing voices calling for the abolition of the tourist carriages in Central Park.

A businessman who had a horse pull a carriage until it collapsed during a midsummer heat wave was indicted by prosecutors on charges of animal cruelty.

Correspondent Kang Na-rim reports from New York.

◀ Report ▶

Central Manhattan, New York.

The horse pulling the carriage is sitting down helplessly.

The owner tried to force him up by swinging the reins like a whip, but

I lie down completely.

A citizen who cannot see anything shouts.

″Why are you hitting me like that?″

(I’m trying to raise you up)

“oh my god..”

Even the police came and sprinkled water on the fallen horse and put ice on it, and it struggled to stand up.

This horse’s name is Rider.

He was pulling a carriage carrying tourists in Central Park, a tourist attraction in New York, and collapsed during a heatwave last August when temperatures soared to nearly 30 degrees.

The rider is over 28 years old, equivalent to his late 80s in human terms.

He was underweight due to malnutrition and suffered from osteomyelitis.

Ryder was eventually euthanized.

Prosecutors in Manhattan, New York, indicted the horse’s owner, saying it was unacceptable animal cruelty for making the horse work until it collapsed in the hot summer.

Horse-drawn carriages have been a subject of long-standing controversy as having them pulled all day in the city is not only cruel but also threatens pedestrian safety.

Previously, the mayor of New York attempted to abolish horse-drawn carriages in 2014, but failed due to opposition from horse-drawn carriage owners, who said they have been a tourist attraction for over 100 years.

Animal protection groups have been raising their voices for several years to use electric carriages instead of horse-drawn carriages.

″Horses in New York fall down on the streets, breathe exhaust fumes in traffic, walk on concrete, live in concrete buildings and stand for hours.″

As voices grow louder that it is time to stop horse-drawn carriages, the number of cities banning horse-drawn carriages is increasing not only in the United States but also around the world.
