Apple iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Review – Introduction

Summarized

The Apple iPhone 12 costs a hundred euros more than its predecessor, the iPhone 11, but is more than ever comparable to the more expensive Pro model. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have the same renewed design, the same beautiful OLED screen and the same fast soc and 5G support. The camera remains the most important point of difference, where you can ‘zoom in’ less with the iPhone 12. Given the large price difference with the 12 Pro, we would take that for granted, making the iPhone 12 probably the most obvious upgrade for people with an iPhone from two or three years ago.

Summarized

The iPhone 12 Pro has a beautiful new design, but a few things have also been renewed on the inside: an even faster SOC, a larger OLED screen and 5G support. While last year’s Pro model was clearly more luxurious than the ‘normal’ iPhone 11, this year the differences with the iPhone 12 are very limited. The biggest difference remains the camera, where you can ‘zoom in’ further with the iPhone 12 Pro. That little bit of extra luxury will cost you no less than two hundred euros. If you can take the high additional price for granted, then the iPhone 12 Pro also gives you a very nice smartphone.

At the beginning of September, it is traditionally time for Apple enthusiasts to look forward to the new iPhone generation. In this special year, however, Apple also had to stop. It was only in October that the Cupertino manufacturer was able to show its latest generation to the general public: the iPhone 12 series. In addition to a completely new design and the promise of 5G support for the first time, as a prospective buyer you have more choice than ever. The new generation has four devices, of which the iPhone 12 Mini is the smallest smartphone that Apple has released in years, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the largest iPhone ever presented.

Apple will release its four new devices in two stages this time. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, with which we started for this review, are now for sale. The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will follow in two weeks, which you can already order as a preorder.

Less differences

As a generation, the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro may be less interesting than the models to come. However, the direct comparison between ’12’ and ’12 Pro ‘can yield fireworks. While the iPhone 11 of last year was a slimmed-down ‘budget model’ with a different (put flat, a bit clumsy) design and a less good screen, the iPhone 12 has become a lot more luxurious. That while the iPhone 12 Pro is not as special as its predecessor. Only the iPhone 12 Pro Max gets the very best cameras this year, with a new, larger sensor for the primary camera, improved stabilization and more ‘zoom’.

In advance, the differences between the Pro model and the normal iPhone 12 promise to be smaller than ever. If you don’t have time to read the entire review: the table below already lists all the points on which the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro differ technically. In all other areas, the devices are exactly the same, from the properties of each camera to the chipset used, the supported 5G bands and the size of the battery. The price difference between the two smartphones has shrunk by 100 euros, but is still 200 euros for a device with the same amount of storage. Is the added value of the ‘Pro’ still great enough to justify that?
