Caravan of cars in support of Trump sparks protests and clashes in NY – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – Clashes between supporters and opponents of President Trump broke out after a caravan of hundreds of trucks of Jews by Trump traveled through Manhattan and Brooklyn with banners of the president and American flags on Sunday afternoon.

The caravan traveled from Coney Island to Trump Tower in Manhattan before heading to a Brooklyn park. Videos shared on Twitter showed several protesters throwing eggs or stones at vehicles, snatching flags and shouting insults.

In one video, physical fights between various people are shown, police officers detained an unidentified man while protesters shouted “let him go.” Another video showed a small group of people throwing objects from a Brooklyn freeway overpass at vehicles adorned with Trump flags.

Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, briefly greeted supporters from the passenger seat of a car driving near Trump Tower during the parade, videos show.

The New York City Police said seven people were arrested in connection with the physical clashes in Times Square. The charges were pending Sunday night.

According to the Jews for Trump website, Sunday’s rally was intended to show solidarity with “the Red Zone community,” a reference to coronavirus hot spots designated by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as areas where schools and non-essential businesses must close to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The rally follows weeks of tensions in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods over coronavirus restrictions. Heshy Tischler, a City Council candidate and leader of the Brooklyn protests against the restrictions, promoted Sunday’s car parade on Twitter.

Boris Epshteyn, a Trump campaign adviser and co-chair of Jewish Voices for Trump, organized Sunday’s protest in Brooklyn’s Marine Park at the end of the car parade.
