European super competition in the making? Barcelona accepts proposal | football

One of Josep Bartomeu’s latest acts as president of Barcelona may well have far-reaching consequences. He confirmed on his farewell that the board has accepted the proposal to participate in a European super competition.

“We agreed yesterday,” he said. “The details of the decision have yet to be approved. This super competition is very important to ensure the financial viability of the club.”

Bartomeu thus feeds the rumors that a European super competition is in the making. According to the English sports channel Sky Sports, more than twelve clubs from the major football countries – England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – are negotiating such a competition.

Liverpool and Manchester United, among others, would also be involved in the talks. The goal is to launch the new competition format in 2022. FIFA would support the proposal, UEFA would be obstructive.

Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish football league, was there like the chickens to put Bartomeu in his place. “Unfortunately, Bartomeu announces his participation in a ghost competition on his last day.”

“That would ruin FC Barcelona and confirm its ignorance about the football industry. A shame for a president who has done good business but made mistakes in the end.”
