NAC coach Maurice Steijn saw his team play against Go Ahead Eagles in the TOTO KNVB Cup on Monday evening. With a tactical intervention he could prevent a real monster defeat: 6-0.
Two days after Ajax’s 0-13 record victory against VVV-Venlo, a new monster score in Dutch football seemed in the making. Go Ahead Eagles led 5-0 against NAC Breda after nineteen minutes.
“Then I thought: intervene. We were going to play with five defenders and no longer had the intention to score a goal, but to prevent an even bigger monstersocre. We succeeded”, says Steijn. FOX Sports.
NAC suffered its third loss in a row in Deventer. Ten players of the team recently tested positive for the corona virus. “But even then, how we give away the goals has nothing to do with professional football,” said Steijn.
The trainer had five debutants from the second team sitting next to him on the bench. They saw with sorrow how things went completely wrong in the Adelaarshorst in the opening phase. “We don’t even start that badly, but the first corner comes in immediately and after that it is chaos in the team”, Steijn saw.
“Nobody gets up to take the lead, that’s a bit of a shock. Every ball on goal went in. Glad I was able to intervene and that it was still possible to coach.”

‘Every day you hope that players stay healthy’
NAC is fourth in the Kitchen Champion Division. Steijn hopes that the team can quickly recover from the weak phase it is now in.
“We play a lot of matches with a narrow selection. We make the most of it,” said the coach. “This crack should make us stronger. The competition is still a long time, every day you hope that players will come back and that others will stay healthy.”
On Friday, a home game with NEC is scheduled for the troubled NAC.
