Apple revealed, at the iPhone 12 event on October 13, a new charging technology called MagSafe. Thanks to a magnet, which also works in combination with various accessories, it is possible to charge your iPhone faster wirelessly.
It is possible to use MagSafe not only for the iPhone 12 series, but also for older models. Although a survey from website MacRumors shows that you may not want that.
Using MagSafe on older iPhones
With MagSafe you get a charger for € 45 that consists of different magnets. This makes it possible to stick the charger on the back of your iPhone 12, so that it can charge “wirelessly” with a power of 15W. Wireless may not be the right name for the technology, given that your smartphones are still tied to a wired charger. Yet MagSafe can be called beneficial. In addition to the fact that various accessories are supported, so you can simply charge with a case around your iPhone, the smartphone is also charged faster in this way. That is, if you own a model from the iPhone 12 series.
MacRumors has done a test where MagSafe was also used on an older iPhone model. The website editors did two different tests with the iPhone XS Max. The same construction was used for both tests. The iPhone XS Max was used until it had only 1% charge left. The aircraft was then put in airplane mode and charged with MagSafe. Something that seemed anything but smooth.
Charge for half an hour
In both tests, the iPhone XS Max was put on MagSafe for half an hour. In this way, it is not only possible to check whether the initial findings are correct, but also whether there is a difference between two different sessions. The first time the iPhone XS Max was charged in this way, it was provided with 13% charge in 30 minutes. In the second test, the iPhone XS Max reached a battery percentage of 14%. For comparison, the same smartphone was charged with a Belkin wireless charger. This charger has a charging power of 7.5W. This caused the iPhone XS Max to be 26% charged after 30 minutes of charging.
It may be clear that MagSafe works with older iPhone models, but that this will give you little or no benefit. That is of course different for people with a model from the iPhone 12 series. With MagSafe it is possible to charge your smartphone considerably faster, although the charging times are indeed higher than when you charge the smartphone with the 20W USB-C charger.
