Donny van de Beek has been associated with leaving Ajax for a long time, this summer he said goodbye to the Amsterdam club and chose Manchester United from the options offered. The step of the Dutch midfielder was immediately criticized and these voices are still getting it right …
Van de Beek celebrated his 23rd birthday in April, and while he was one of the key figures in Ajax, at Old Trafford he plays the role of a substitute in the big competition. In the basic line-up, he started only two cup matches, in the Premier League and the Champions League he jumps to the final minutes.
“Donny shouldn’t have gone to United. If you’re a good football player, you want to play every week. It’s really bad for players like him to play six or seven games a year, it will completely destroy his rhythm.” considers Marco van Basten.
“I know he earns more than he’s used to, but as a top player you have to be self-critical and look for chances when you move to a big club. Donny should have waited for a better offer and moved to another club. And a five-year contract? That’s complete “nonsense, then you don’t have to go to Manchester United, but wait for another team. You have to want to play week after week, such a club is a bad choice for your career,” the legendary attacker continued.
Real Madrid has long been interested in Van de Beek and United paid £ 40m for it. It’s not just the footballer who has been criticized for his choice, given the presence of Paul Pogby and Bruno Fernandez, the attitude of Manchester United did not make sense to many people.
“That’s true. Nothing against him, but why did United buy him? He only watches all the matches from the stands,” says former Red Devils defender Patrice Evra, joined by Gary Neville: “He must think, ‘What am I doing here?'”
