Koreans have invented a battery on which an electric car can travel 1000 km :: Autonews

The Korean company SK Innovation spoke about the work on two types of batteries for electric cars: with one of them, the car will be able to travel 800 km with two 10-minute recharges, and on the other, it will cover 1000 km without stopping. Presentations passed with Seoul at the InterBattery 2020 Forum hosted by the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The company says its goal is to spearhead efforts to develop better batteries for electric cars. According to SK Innovation, the main criteria for evaluating a battery are: safety, speed of charging and the distance that a car can cover on a single charge.

At the Seoul forum, the company said that it is developing its products with an eye on these parameters and has already managed to achieve success – in 10 years of sales, there has not been a single case when their batteries would catch fire. Inside EVs Portal notesthat this is a significant achievement, although it is difficult to assess it, because SK Innovation does not produce batteries on the scale of its competitors – Panasonic, LG Chem or CATL.

The Korean firm also talked about work on a battery that would allow the car to travel 800 km with two short 10-minute charges. The development is expected to be presented at the end of 2020 or the first half of 2021. If all goes well, then experts predict such a battery will be a success in the market – it would help the faster spread of electric cars around the world.

The main achievement of SK Innovation was the testing of the battery, on which the car drove 1000 km without stopping under optimal driving conditions.

“We have successfully tested batteries with which the car drove 1000 km, and this is the first time for our industry. Long distance travel is possible by using high-density nickel in conjunction with our proprietary design, which positively affects battery performance even after thousands of full charges and discharges, the company said.

The popularity of electric vehicles in the world is reaching a new level, with the prices of electric cars and conventional gasoline cars can equal already by 2024. Financial holding UBS Global predicts that in five years, 17% of all cars in the world will be electric, and by 2030 this figure will increase to 40%.
