NEW YORK – Dramatic video shows the moment a kitten is rescued from a raging fire that left two police officers and several tenants injured in a Harlem apartment building after a man wanted on domestic violence charges locked himself in a room and set it on fire.
Cell phone video from a nearby building shows flames from the second-story window Saturday afternoon. The fire was started in Lincoln Houses by a man who, according to police, barricaded himself inside.
Suspect locks himself in an apartment and sets off a fire in Manhattan.
Firefighters were dispatched to the apartment near Fifth Avenue and 135th Street around 3 p.m.
Destiny Robinson watched from the sidewalk as her mother came in to rescue her 9-year-old sister and 15-year-old brother trapped two floors up.
“My brother and sister were in that room, he opened the window and that’s when I saw the flames light up, so I panicked, like ‘children, children, please get my brother and sister out of the room.’ because I didn’t want anything to happen to them, “Robinson said.
“My mom ran into the fire without a mask and I started to panic because it took them a long time to get down the stairs,” he said.
Investigators say they were called to the building over a domestic dispute and discovered a man who had locked himself inside the apartment and then set fire to a knock on the door.
Aaron Ganaway captured the moment a cat jumped out of the second-story window as flames forced the pet off the ledge and leap towards the officers below.
The police were finally able to force their way into the apartment room. The man was taken unconscious and taken to hospital.
Seven other people were injured, including two police officers.
