NEW YORK – A suspect is in custody after he allegedly stole a police car in New Jersey and led police on a chase to Brooklyn.
In the span of about half an hour, officers chased a stolen vehicle out of Bayonne and chased the suspect until it crashed around 1 a.m. after driving police through at least two New York City boroughs. .
Police say the 32-year-old car thief stole a vehicle marked Bayonne Police Department just before 12:30 a.m. and headed toward Staten Island.
It was then that the Port Authority police saw the stolen vehicle on the Goethals Bridge and began to pursue the driver.
Once the driver reached the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, New York police officers joined the chase.
Police say the chase ended when the suspect collided with a parked and unoccupied car on Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street in Brooklyn.
The driver was taken into custody and will face charges.
