Spike in Covid-19 Cases in South Korean Hospitals and Nursing Homes

South Korea noted the highest increase in COVID-19 cases in more than 40 days as of Friday 23 October. Cases of infection have been reported in hospitals and nursing homes.

Quoting Channel News Asia (24/10), a nursing home in Namyangju, in the eastern region of Seoul City, was isolated after more than 30 workers and residents tested positive. Meanwhile, there have been around 120 cases of infection at a hospital near Gwangju.

Of the 155 new cases announced on Friday by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the national total number of Corona COVID-19 infections reached 25,775, including 457 deaths. Among 1,484 active cases, 60 are in serious condition

The agency also reported 138 cases on Friday due to local transmission.

Most cases occur in large urban areas. Meanwhile 59 new cases occurred Saturday 24/10 in the densely populated Seoul metropolitan area. The capital has been the epicenter of the outbreak since the summer.

At least 17 of the new cases were linked to international arrivals, including passengers arriving from France, Kuwait, Nepal, Bangladesh and Japan. As of Saturday, eleven new cases were linked to international arrivals, including passengers from the United States, the Philippines and India.

The constant spread of the Coronavirus has caused concern in South Korea. The reason is, the country has relaxed social restrictions since last week to cope with a declining economy. High-risk businesses such as nightclubs and karaoke bars have reopened, while sports fans have signed up to sports stadiums to watch games.

Previously, South Korea was also hit by panic after the death of 13 people in the country after receiving influenza vaccine injections. Officials said the death could have been caused by anaphylaxis or a serious allergic reaction, but gave no further details.

Meanwhile, South Korean flu vaccine distributors include LG Chem Ltd and Boryung Biopharma Co. Ltd., which is part of Boryung Pharm Co. Ltd. GC Pharma, LG Chem, SK Bioscience and Boryung declined to comment on people dying after receiving their flu shot. The other distributors, Ilyang Pharmaceutical, Sanofi and GSK could not be reached for comment.

The case in South Korea provides lessons for Indonesian society. Before there was a vaccine, currently the best prevention to minimize contracting the Corona virus was to do the 3M movement (wearing a mask, washing hands with water and coir, and maintaining distance from crowds).
