A 19-year-old student was sentenced this Friday by the Besançon Court to four months in prison with a suspended sentence and six months of citizenship classes for writing a comment on Facebook, stating that Samuel Paty “Deserved to die”. The professor was beheaded in Paris on October 16 for having shown cartoons about Mohammed in a class.
The comment in question was published on the Facebook page of L’Est Républicain, a regional daily. He was later reported by a user of the social network to the Pharos platform, dedicated to reporting illicit acts on the internet. After an investigation, French police arrested the biology student last Thursday and placed her in police custody. The sentence was quick: the young woman, from a Muslim family in Algeria, was convicted this Friday for excusing terrorism.
The student regretted the episode and apologized, saying she was “against” what you wrote. Confessed that he wrote “without thinking” and who is aware that he committed “A very serious mistake”. For her part, the young woman’s lawyer, Caroline Espuche, said that the biology student reacted “warmly, without seeking additional information” and that she understood the situation as a ridicule by Muslims, reports the French media.
