The Belgian state does not appeal against the conviction for reception of asylum seekers

Our country will not appeal against the conviction a few weeks ago about not receiving asylum seekers. That said State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Sammy Mahdi (CD&V) today in the Parliamentary Committee on the Interior.

Since the outbreak of the corona virus in our country, asylum seekers have to make an appointment online for their asylum application, in order to avoid long queues at the counters. But as a result, asylum seekers were not immediately received upon arrival in our country, which is mandatory under international law. The Belgian state was therefore condemned at the beginning of October.

Not on appeal

Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Sammy Mahdi (CD&V) announced today in the House of Representatives Committee on the Interior that our country will not appeal against this conviction. “There is no ground to appeal against this decision and such an appeal would not be suspensive. I will therefore comply with the decision of the Brussels Court of First Instance ”, zei Mahdi.

This means that our country will now have to receive asylum seekers immediately, instead of having them make an appointment online first. Mahdi let him know “Examines possible avenues to respond to this without endangering the safety of staff, interpreters and applicants for international protection”.
