The European Parliament on Friday rejected a proposal to ban names such as “burger”, “steak” or “sausage” for vegetarian products. Veggie burgers or soy steaks can therefore remain on the menu.

The Agriculture Committee of the European Parliament had proposed to reserve terms such as “citizen” for food products containing animal meat. The names could then no longer be used for vegetable alternatives made on the basis of vegetables or grains.

However, a large majority of the European Parliament in plenary session on Friday opposed the proposal. However, a majority was in favor of an extension of the ban on presenting products without animal milk such as “yoghurt”, “cheese” and “cream”. Parliament also wants to ban descriptive terms such as “yogurt style”.

The votes took place as part of a marathon vote on the future of the common agricultural policy. The result of the final vote is expected later on Friday. Afterwards, the MEPs also have to negotiate with the agriculture ministers.
