“Our mom has disappeared; we are in shock”, says Annick, one of Raymonde and Roger’s children. “Who does such a thing now? And how long has she been gone? Have any urns disappeared from the columbarium? We did everything we could. We hope to find our mom again. It’s a good thing that Dad doesn’t have to experience this anymore, because his wife’s death was hard for him. ”
The family suspects the theft is the work of vandals. Elsewhere in the cemetery, photos have been damaged and mementos destroyed. Mayor Sandy Evrard van Mesen (MLM) calls the theft one of the cowardiest acts he has ever witnessed. He will consider whether the cemetery can be better secured.
