For the first time on Lāčplēsis Day, you will be able to see what the illuminated Freedom Monument will look like. The development of the details of the construction project began on Thursday, during which the roots of Dutch linden were studied. The authors of the project explain that it is necessary to know exactly where the six long masts with spotlights will be, which will allow you to see the Statue of Liberty and other elements of the monument well even in the dark.

Architect Austris Mailītis shows the performers the places where it is planned to place the lighting poles of the Freedom Monument. As very old Dutch linden trees grow on both sides of the alleys, it is necessary to study precisely the extent to which the roots of historic trees stretch and where the spotlights can be located.

“Research is going on today. We are still working on the project. Now we have a detailed project. A concept has been developed and the so-called minimum project has been submitted to the construction board,” said the architect.

The project to illuminate the Freedom Monument is the idea of ​​former President Valdis Zatlers. This monument is a symbol of national freedom, which once became a national donation and the society has so far donated more than 41 thousand euros for lighting. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a number of events will not take place this year on both 11 November and 18 November. But there are plans to please Rigans and guests of the city, trying for the first time what the illuminated monument will look like.

“On November 11, these lights will be tested in the dark.

People can come watch. The image of Freedom, the obelisk and other groups of images will be illuminated. Here is a photograph of the image of Freedom at the top, in the dark. It is a natural photo of November last year, “said Mailitis.

But in the second photo we can see what the Statue of Liberty and the rest of the complex will look like with the spotlights on.

The Freedom Monument is more than 42 m high and includes 13 groups of sculptures.
