DFB Cup: Ruhrpott Derby between Dortmund and Duisburg

In the first round of the DFB Cup tonight, the Ruhrpott derby takes place:
MSV Duisburg welcomes runner-up Borussia Dortmund!

Although BVB is the clear favorite, Borussia is hit harder than FC Bayern Munich, which was assigned to the fifth division in Düren.

The MSV secured the ticket for the DFB-Pokal as fifth in the 3rd division because – in contrast to the two higher divisions – not every third division team is automatically allowed to participate in the largest national tournament.

Originally, Duisburg was the favorite for the 2019/20 season as relegated from the second division and got off to a strong start with victory in the autumn championship. The “Zebras” were able to defend their lead in the standings up to the 33rd match day, but could not withstand the pressure and were passed through to fifth place due to numerous point losses.

In order to survive this evening against the superior Ruhrpott neighbor, Duisburg has to go a step further. This is also shown by the last encounter between the two teams at the “Cup of Traditions” a few weeks ago: At that time, BVB swept the third division club 5-1 off the pitch.

Not only because the black and yellow squad is worth more than 100 times the Duisburg squad, anything but a BVB victory would be a surprise.

The game in the Duisburg Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena starts at 8:45 p.m.
