Administrative court in Kassel rejects federal action against storage.
The Hessian administrative court has rejected the action of the Federal Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) against the storage of six Castor containers in the decommissioned Biblis nuclear power plant. The Hessian regional association of the BUND had tried to prevent the transport of the containers from the British reprocessing plant in Sellafield to Hesse.
As the court announced on Wednesday, the authorization to store additional Castor containers in Biblis will not be suspended for the time being. This means that the Castors from Sellafield can also come to Biblis. The BUND’s urgent application is unfounded. There is considerable public interest in receiving the reprocessed nuclear fuel from the Sellafield facility in a timely manner.
The BUND was disappointed with the decision. The BUND atomic expert Werner Neumann complained that the Castor emplacement did not meet the essential objectives of nuclear law to prevent damage from radioactive radiation. A major problem is that there is no way of repairing a container if a lid leaks.
The transport originally scheduled for March 12th has been postponed to October 26th to November 4th. The castors should then arrive in Nordenham near Bremerhaven and be brought to Biblis by rail via Göttingen, Fulda, Frankfurt and Darmstadt. A broad alliance is mobilizing against this transport.
