VAdvertising was promised free of charge. Baden-Württemberg was the only non-nation to present itself in a pavilion at the Expo in Dubai, financed almost exclusively from donations from business. The state would have had to pay just 2.8 million euros. “From the economy for the economy” was the cheap slogan with which the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Engineers praised the project, especially to the CDU Minister for Economic Affairs, Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut. Now the United Arab Emirates expo has been postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. And the alleged “free offer” turns out to be a financial and political mortgage.

Because the donations did not come together, the taxpayer has to bear the bill for the amateurishly organized project – according to the current status at least 15 million euros. This week, at the request of the SPD and FDP, a committee of inquiry was set up. The minister and the officials overburdened by the Corona aid have to ask their questions for months. Actually, the goal of the CDU is to use the economic competence it claims to drive the Greens out of the Stuttgart State Ministry after ten years and to become the strongest party again.
