The royal family appears to have only partially returned from Greece on Saturday. Princesses Amalia and Alexia only boarded the plane to Schiphol tonight. They were on board recognized by fellow passengers. They don’t like that at all in the House of Representatives!
Peter Plasman, who I can now technically call my colleague, was able to perfectly express the fuss and dissatisfaction about the royal family’s flying holiday in his first column at DDS. In my immediate vicinity I heard a similar sound: ‘the king should set a good example, but instead he leaves us mortals alone and takes a nice break to a Greek island with code yellow !! 1’ everywhere.
And it is all not convenient of him. And letting the two princesses fly over just now is of course only adding fuel to the fire. He really misjudged the people’s reaction, I recognize that. But I have to admit, I probably would have gone on vacation if I had been in his shoes.
I don’t quite understand that solidarity argument either. ‘People in healthcare are currently working themselves to death’, yes that’s right. ‘And the elderly are also having a very hard time at the moment’, that’s right. ‘And the catering industry is now having a hard time!’ Yes that’s true. But why should the royal family stay at home? Is the solidarity if they go into quarantine in their own fat palace? Or perhaps they should have been involved in care for a few weeks first? Had they met our tax money throw their own money to save the hospitality industry? Oh no? I think people just want to feel like they are suffering just like everyone else. But why should a fucking king (with money like shit (and too little shit)) do that to himself and his family?
And let’s not pretend they set a bad example by going to one on vacation code yellow area to go. The rest of the Netherlands had to and would necessarily go on holiday in July and August when corona was also far from gone. That was also not really solidarity, let alone ‘setting a good example’, was it? The royal family there in Greece probably secluded from other people as well. And otherwise they have a man for that, so it is not all that irresponsible.
I also agree with a lot of criticism of the royal family. They receive an absurd amount of money and have very generous arrangements with the government. I really like that more sober. But they do have those arrangements and the money and privileges that come with it. The king is simply not the same as a wealthy Dutchman and so he will not behave like that.
